PUBLIC WORKS DIVERSITY COMMITTEE
PLANNED ACTION GOALS 
& OBJECTIVES



Long Term Goals/Objectives:

  

    1.   TRAINING : Committee will act in an advisory capacity, to provide
        guidance and feedback, for Public Works diversity training    
        package(s).

  1. COMMUNICATION: Committee to take an active part in communicating diversity issues, including goals and objectives. This also includes the committee becoming visible in the community (both County and at large). This objective can be obtained via the following avenues:
  1. Submit monthly articles to PW Newsletter, with a sub-committee responsible for implementation. Also submit articles to Lane County newsletter from time to time.
  2. Maintain open communication with Human Resources.
  3. Maintain communication with other Diversity Committees (i.e., County, other Cities).
  4. Maintain communication with fieldworkers.
  5. Maintain communication with County Commissioners.
  6. Maintain visibility at local events, with an information table.
  7. Attend management meetings and present/address pertinent issues. This can be done on a quarterly schedule.
  8. Attend Foreman meetings from time to time.
    3.    CAREER DEVELOPMENT: Committee will act in an advisory capacity to 
            P.W. Management and Human Resources:
  1. Help identify and communicate current issues associated with upward mobility within the County.
  2. Help identify and communicate issues pertaining to succession planning.
  3. Help identify and communicate issues pertaining to morale.

    4.     RECRUITMENT: Committee will self-educate on the following issues,    
            and act in an advisory capacity to P.W. Management and Human
            Resources:

  1. What positions are currently open for employment (HR/PW/info).
  2. Number of current employees.
  3. How to keep positions filled with intended purpose.
  4. Help develop a brochure, to be used as a recruitment tool.

Short Term Goals/Objectives:
August 2001 through March 2002

  1. PW Diversity Training Package: Ken Sandusky to present PW Diversity training package to Diversity Committee members, in order to get feedback and help solidify package before the training is presented to PW employees. Goal for implementation is late Fall/Winter 2001. He will present the package to the committee summer 2001.
  2. PW Newsletter Articles: Committee will discuss and decide on articles for next 6 months. Committee will also have a permanent agenda item for newsletter articles at every (monthly) meeting.
  3. Informational Brochure: Committee will look at, discuss, and set time line for implementation of a PW recruitment brochure. Sub-committee will put together a draft brochure and present it to the committee at the end of September 2001.
  4. Eugene Celebration: Committee will discuss how PW will be represented at the Eugene Celebration – booth or participation in Eugene Celebration parade.
  5. Joint meeting with Other Lane County Diversity Groups: Laura Yergan will organize, set the agenda, and invite groups to attend a meeting, consisting of all diversity groups at Lane County, scheduled at the end of September. Marcy Middleton will work with Laura, as a representative of Public Works Diversity Committee. Public Works Diversity Committee will participate in this meeting.
  6. Summer Help Hiring Process: Committee to research and evaluate the current summer help recruitment and hiring process and how it interfaces with our diversity goals. PW Director, Oliver Snowden, has requested the committee to report back to him regarding information gathered and recommendations for next year’s hiring process. Timeline: January/February 2001. Caroline Manewal will take the lead
