With help from the community, Lane County Emergency Management has compiled and submitted to the State an initial estimate of damages caused by the storm that whipped through Lane County in mid-January. It is important to note that these are estimates only and are likely to change over time. Damage estimates are still being collected. Community members may still access the online reporting tool at www.lanecounty.org/damages. However, the phone bank is no longer in service.
It is unknown at this time what federal aid programs will be made available to Lane County residents, businesses and public infrastructure agencies, if any. The next step is up to the State. The State of Oregon will need to request that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) deploy joint State/Federal Preliminary Disaster Assessment Teams to Oregon communities affected by the recent storm’s high winds, floods and landslides.
If that happens, several teams will begin assessing damage to homes and property over a several day period in affected counties throughout the state. The teams would include local and state officials and possibly representatives of the U.S. Small Business Administration and FEMA.
These teams visit and inspect damaged areas, document damage and talk, as needed, with homeowners and local officials. It is a joint effort intended to provide a clear picture of the extent and locations of damage in counties that have reported the most substantial damage to primary residences and businesses.
The teams assess the total scope of damage to establish if recovery is beyond the capabilities and resources of state and local governments. The joint teams do not determine the total cost of recovery, nor does their assessment guarantee a Presidential declaration for individual assistance.
